Newer GPUs:

  • Use 12V-2×6 / 12VHPWR connectors with power-sense signaling

  • Have much higher transient (spike) loads

  • Can draw large bursts of current in microseconds

Even if average power looks acceptable, the PSU must handle short-duration spikes without voltage sag.

Does PSU quality matter or just wattage?

Both matter.

A good PSU should be:

  • ATX 3.0 / PCIe Gen5 compliant for 40- and 50-series GPUs

  • From a reputable brand

  • Equipped with a native 12V-2×6 cable (not adapters when possible)

An 850W low-quality unit can perform worse than a 750W high-quality one.
